Practical Information

Terms and Conditions

  • You will need to be prepared to live in the same conditions as the local community in the remote village. This includes sleeping on the floor with a mat and using a mosquito net, especially when staying in the Mentawai jungle at night.

  • Given the conditions of poverty and isolated areas, the families that allow us to live and spend time with them provide more than the necessities, but they may not meet "Western standards" of comfort and cleanliness. In such situations, it's essential to be able to tolerate this temporary discomfort to fully enjoy your stay and overall experience.

  • The traditional Mentawai communities live in remote areas within the jungle forest. Accessing these communities is not simple and easy. The trek conditions include navigating through a lot of muddy terrain, slippery and uneven ground. Sometimes, you have to walk on logs placed by the Mentawai to form bridges over the muddy ground to reach further routes.

  • Please remember that there is no electricity in the Mentawai jungle. Be sure to charge your camera and phone, and bring an extra battery. The conditions during this trip can be uncomfortable, so each participant needs to be

  •  mentally prepared and adaptable. It's important to be well-informed about the culture and ways of life in Mentawai and the jungle before departure. The guide will provide a briefing and explain this before the trip begins.

Things good to know during Orangutan trekking

  • Wildlife viewing and safety information During visiting GunungLeuser National Park

  • ORANGUTANS BEHAVIOUR

  • Wild orangutans spend most of their time high in the forest canopy and rarely come into contact with humans, but ex-captive orangutans in Bukit Lawang frequently walk on the ground and often come into close contact with humans

  • Their behavior and the behavior of human visitors is making them sick

  • WHY ORANGUTANS CAN GET SICK AFTER CONTACT WITH HUMAN

    1. Orangutans are genetically very close to humans ( 97%) and catch many of our diseases

    2. Measles, TB, pneumonia, and influenza are spread when you cough, sneeze or even spit. Shigella, hepatitis A, herpes, scabies, and worms, are carried in human feces.

THE EFFECT OF HUMAN CONTACT WITH ORANGUTANS

  • Orangutans may look like they are OK around humans but it is not normal for them to be so close

  • This change in natural behaviors can lead Orangutan to get a very high level of stress

  • STRESS CAN LEAD THEM TO heart failure, poor reproductive health, high infant mortality, depressed immune system

  • And ultimately may result in PREMATURE DEATH!

  • HOW YOU CAN HELP #KEEPWILDLIFEWILD

  • Follow the rules! tell your guide you wish to follow them and tell your fellow trekkers :

DON'T get close than 15 meter

DO NOT TOUCH!

DO NOT GIVE FOOD OR DRINK!

DO NOT SELFIES IF AN ORANGUTAN APPROACHES YOU!

  • Nature needs your photos and stories but nature also needs you to be responsible. Please ONLY take or post photos on social media that show you at a safe distance from wildlife #selfieaware
